Level editors and player-made content
Players as designers
Shard Garden's level editor lets players build gardens and share them. Player-made levels can keep a game fresh for years, longer than the studio could build alone.
Two kinds of workshop
Valve's Steam Workshop has two models. In a ready-to-use Workshop, "Anyone can upload content and players can download content without any curation."
In a curated Workshop, "you will need to approve each item", and only chosen items go into the game.
Quick check
Shard Garden wants every shared level available at once, with reports to catch problems. Which model is that?
- Ready-to-use
- Curated
- Neither
Show the answer
Ready-to-use
Ready-to-use means no approval step before players can download. The Trust and safety stage adds checks for young players.
Tools that teach
A good editor starts with templates and a short tutorial, and checks a level before it is shared: can the goal be reached? Is there a way out of every room?
Helping good levels get found
Thousands of levels need sorting. Priya's system shows new levels to a few players first, then shows the ones people finish and like to more players.
Fix the editor
Priya sees players sharing levels that nobody can finish. What should Remy change?
- The creator must finish their own level before sharing it
- Hide all new levels
- Remove the editor
Show the answer
The creator must finish their own level before sharing it
If the creator has finished it, the level is possible. It keeps the editor open and the levels fair.
Credit the creator
Every shared level shows its creator's name and how many players finished it. Being seen is a reward, even before money is involved.
Quick check
A level editor should let players share levels that have never been finished.
- True
- False
Show the answer
False
An impossible level wastes players' time. A finish check proves it can be done.
Going further
Some players want to change the game itself, not just build levels.
