Quick check

Why is "my house is the blue one on Elm Road" blocked, when it has no rude words?

  1. It is personal information: where the player lives
  2. Elm is a rude word
  3. It is too long
Show the answer

It is personal information: where the player lives

A filter for children protects their information, not just their ears. An address is never shared in public chat.

Rephrase, not just block

On Roblox, "Messages with profanity will be rephrased into a safe and civil message automatically." A friendly sentence keeps the game kind, where a row of hash signs only shows that something rude was said.

Spot the trick

A player types "my num is seven 7 oh 9 ..." with the digits spelled out. What should Priya's filter do?

  1. Blocked: it is still a phone number, however it is typed
  2. Allowed: there are no digits in a row
  3. Allowed: the filter only checks rude words

Blocked: it is still a phone number, however it is typed

People spell numbers out to slip past filters. A good filter, and a good moderator, looks at what the message means.

Filters miss things

New spellings appear every week. Reports catch what the filter misses, and Priya's moderators add each new trick to the filter's list.

Quick check

Blocking the exact phrase "add me on" stops every attempt to move a child off the game.

False

There are endless ways to say it. Filters, reports and moderators work together.

On the studio board

The studio adds a decision to the board:

Chat for players 12 and under is filtered for personal information and invitations off the game. Every report reaches a person within 24 hours.

Bolt says: Next: reporting and blocking.
