True story: Nintendo 3DS and Wii U go offline
Nintendo wrote: "At 5pm PDT on April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication was discontinued for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software", including "online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution".
"Players are still able to use features and game modes that do not require online communication." StreetPass, which works locally, kept working.

Game modes that don't need the internet, and StreetPass
Only online features ended. Offline modes and StreetPass, which works locally, kept going.
Keep the game playable
Games that work offline survive their servers. Remy's plan for Shard Garden: if it ever closes, an update turns on an offline garden that keeps each player's last save on their own device.
Write the plan
Kai drafts the plan Shard Garden would follow. Which treats players best?
- Three months' notice, sales stopped at once, offline gardens kept
- Close the servers tomorrow
- Keep selling coins until the last day

Three months' notice, sales stopped at once, offline gardens kept
Notice, no new sales and a way to keep playing: the players lose as little as possible.
Thank the players
