Balance the coins

Play this lesson

300,000 too many

Shard Garden creates 1,200,000 coins a day and removes 900,000. Kai, Remy and Theo bring three ideas. One of them brings the economy into balance.

Try it

Balance the coins

Pick the idea that makes coins in equal coins out.

Try it in the lesson

Quick check

Remy's idea was doubling the daily gift. Why does it make things worse?

  1. It is a source: it creates even more coins
  2. It is a sink
  3. Gifts don't count
Show the answer

It is a source: it creates even more coins

Gifts create coins. More gifts mean more coins piling up.

Small fees add up

A 1% fee on player trades removes some coins every day. It helps, but here it removes far too few: trades between players only move about 5,000,000 coins a day.

Do the math

trades per day
coins traded 5,000,000fee 1%

How many coins does the fee remove each day?

  1. 50,000
  2. 500,000
  3. 5,000
Show the answer

50,000

1% of 5,000,000 is 50,000: a sixth of the 300,000 gap.

Watch it after launch

A new sink is a guess until players use it. The team watches the dashboard for two weeks after the greenhouse launches and adjusts its price if coins still pile up.

Quick check

Once a sink launches, the team can stop watching the economy.

Show the answer

False

Players change how they play. The balance is checked every week, not once.

On the studio board

The studio adds a decision to the board:

Every coin source and sink is logged with a reason. Coins in and coins out are reviewed every week.
