Achievements and rewards
Why rewards feel good
When a medal pops up on screen, it feels good. Scientists link that feeling to dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain that helps us learn which actions are worth doing again.
A reward is the game saying "you did something cool, and I noticed". Good rewards make players want to explore, practise and come back. Bad rewards make a game feel like a job.
Achievements and badges
- AchievementA goal the game notices and celebrates, like "Pest Control: defeat 1,000 pests".
- BadgeThe picture you collect for it, shown on your profile.
- Hyper Shards example"Untouchable: clear a whole wave without getting hit."
- Platform achievementsSteam, Google Play Games and Apple's Game Center can show achievements on the player's profile, outside the game too.
Quick check
Which of these is an achievement?
- "Green Thumb: grow 100 sunflowers" pops up with a badge
- The game loads in two seconds
- The music gets louder in boss fights

"Green Thumb: grow 100 sunflowers" pops up with a badge
An achievement is a goal the game tracks and celebrates when you reach it, often with a badge to keep.
Reward skill and curiosity
- SkillBeat a boss without using a shield. You feel proud because you got better.
- CuriosityFind the secret corner of the garden, or try every ship once.
- Not just time"Play for 100 hours" only rewards sitting there. Skill and curiosity are more fun.
Daily rewards and streaks
A daily reward is a small gift for opening the game, like 20 seeds in Garden Defense. A streak counts how many days in a row you played.
Streaks can be fun, but they can turn mean. If missing one day wipes out everything, players feel stressed instead of happy. Fair games keep your rewards, or give you a "streak saver" for busy days.
Quick check
A good daily streak takes away all your rewards if you miss one day.
- True
- False
Show the answer
False
Wiping everything for one missed day feels like punishment. Players have school, sports and family. Fair streaks forgive a missed day.
Power-ups
A power-up is a short boost during play. In Hyper Shards, grab a glowing shard for triple shot for 10 seconds. In Garden Defense, a golden sunflower doubles your seeds for one wave.
Power-ups are best when you earn them by playing. If players can only win by buying them, that's called pay to win, and it isn't fair.
The chore test
Ask: "would I do this even without the reward?"
- Fun: beat a boss in a new way, find a hidden pest, try a new ship.
- Chore: log in, watch five ads, play three matches, every day, or lose your prize.
If a reward feels like homework, change it or cut it.
Chore test
Three ideas for the Garden Defense daily reward. One of them has to go. Which one?
Which daily reward fails the chore test?
- Watch five ads every day for 30 days, or your streak and prize reset to zero
- 20 seeds for opening the game, and a missed day only pauses your streak
- A daily puzzle garden with a new pest layout, and a badge if you solve it
Show the answer
Watch five ads every day for 30 days, or your streak and prize reset to zero
Forced daily ads with a reset are pure homework, and the reset adds fear. The other two are small, forgiving, and reward curiosity and skill.
Next: reaching players
A new event or reward only helps if players know about it. Next lesson: push notifications, and how to use them without becoming annoying. After that, listening to what players tell us.
Bolt says: The best reward is a game that's fun to play. Medals and badges are the extra layer on top.
