So many ways to code
No laptop, no problem?
Remy is on the bus when a player posts: "the shop shows 0 seeds after I buy". The laptop with Antigravity 2.0 is at home.
A few years ago that meant waiting. Not anymore. An IDE, one app that holds all your coding tools, is only one way to code. The same AI teammate, Claude, can also work from a terminal, from GitHub, from a web browser or from a phone.
The brain stays the same. What changes is where you talk to it, and which computer does the work.
GUI or CLI?
Every program needs an interface: a way for people to control it.
- A GUI (graphical user interface) has windows, buttons and menus you click. Antigravity 2.0 is a GUI.
- A CLI (command-line interface) is controlled by typing commands in a terminal, like
git status. The command line lesson covers the basics.
Many tools have both: an IDE's Git buttons run the same Git commands you could type. CLIs matter for AI because typed commands are exact, easy to repeat and need no screen. Agents can use them, and so can robots like GitHub Actions.
Quick check
Kai types git log --oneline in the terminal. Remy clicks through the Git panel of an IDE and sees the same commits. Which is right?
- Kai used a CLI and Remy used a GUI, and both talk to the same Git
- Only Kai really used Git, the buttons keep a separate copy
- Only Remy really used Git, because terminals are just for experts
Show the answer
Kai used a CLI and Remy used a GUI, and both talk to the same Git
The commits live in the repo, and both interfaces read them. The GUI's buttons run Git commands behind the scenes, and the CLI lets you type them yourself.
A CLI agent: Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent, and its main form is a CLI. Open a terminal and type:
cd hyper-shardsclaude
Then you ask in plain words. Claude Code reads the code, edits files, runs commands like npm test, and can make commits, branches and pull requests.
There is no file tree and no editor panel, so you may not need an IDE at all. You read each change as a diff (the removed and added lines) with git diff or on GitHub, and play the game in the browser. The same Claude Code also runs inside editors and in a desktop app.
@claude on GitHub
Claude can also work on GitHub itself. Write @claude in a comment on an issue (a task card) or a pull request (a request to merge changes):
"@claude snails in level 3 walk through the fence. Fix it and add a test."
A GitHub Actions workflow, the same robot that runs our tests, starts Claude on one of GitHub's computers. Claude replies there, pushes commits to a branch and can open a pull request.
Setup happens once: /install-github-app in Claude Code installs the Claude GitHub App and adds the workflow file. Only people with write access to the repo can call Claude this way.
Bolt says: Every @claude run uses GitHub Actions minutes and Claude usage. A clear, specific request finishes in fewer steps and costs less.
Quick check
When Remy writes @claude in an issue comment, Claude does the work on Remy's laptop, so the laptop must be switched on.
- True
- False
Show the answer
False
A GitHub Actions workflow runs Claude on one of GitHub's computers, so Remy's laptop can be off. The answer arrives as a comment, and the change arrives as commits and a pull request.
Coding from a browser or phone
Claude Code on the web lives at claude.ai/code, and the Claude app for iOS and Android has it in its Code tab. Both start a cloud session. Claude works in an isolated virtual machine (a computer simulated on Anthropic's servers) that clones our repo from GitHub. It works on a branch and pushes it, and you create a pull request when you're happy.
A cloud session keeps going after you close the app, and you can run several side by side. Back at the desk, claude --teleport pulls a session and its branch into your terminal.
Which way for which job?
- IDE with agentsAntigravity 2.0. Best when you need to see a lot at once: big diffs, merge conflicts, tuning how the ship feels while you play.
- CLI agentClaude Code in a terminal. Fast, focused jobs on your own computer, especially ones that need many commands.
- @claude on GitHubSmall, clear tasks already written as an issue. The result comes back as a pull request to review.
- Cloud sessionStart or steer a job from a browser or phone, or run several long jobs at once, even with your laptop off.
- Quick browser editPress the full stop key on a GitHub repo to open github.dev, a free editor in the browser. Fine for a typo, but it has no terminal and can't run the game.
Pick the way
Bought 3 seeds in Garden Defense and the shop still says Seeds: 0. Same on two phones.
Remy is on a school trip with only a phone, and wants a fix ready to review tonight. What fits best?
- A cloud session in the Claude app's Code tab: Claude fixes it on a branch, and Remy reviews the pull request tonight
- Open github.dev on the phone, rewrite shop.js by hand, and push straight to main
- Wait until home, then paste the whole game into a chat window
Show the answer
A cloud session in the Claude app's Code tab: Claude fixes it on a branch, and Remy reviews the pull request tonight
A cloud session runs on Anthropic's computers, so a phone is enough, and the fix arrives on a branch for review. github.dev can't run the game or tests, and pushing to main skips review. Pasting into a chat is the old copy, paste and hope way.
Same habits, every door
Whichever way you code, the studio rules stay the same. Work happens on a branch, never straight on main. Every change is read as a diff and reviewed in a pull request. The robot runs the tests before anything is merged.
One more rule: at the time of writing, Claude accounts are for people aged 18 and over (older in some countries), because the terms of service are a contract. So the studio's account belongs to a parent, and you work in it together.
Bolt says: Whatever the door, Claude does its best work with a clear request. Next lesson: prompts that work.
